What to Wear for Family Photos-New Braunfels Family Photographer Guide

Right now in Texas everything is green, fresh, and so pretty-it is the perfect backdrop for family pictures. Many of my clients put off portraits for years because they are paralyzed with one of the big tasks with pictures; what to wear. Let me help you with this. We don’t want you to go years without family portraits.

The best place to start is with mom: choose an outfit that makes you feel truly beautiful. Think of the color, fabric, texture and what you want to emphasize (legs maybe) and hide (arms maybe)? From there, build everyone else’s outfit by choosing 3 complementary colors and mixing in texture like linen, knits or subtle patterns to add depth without feeling busy-distracting.

Aim for outfits that feel like your family, blend well together and even think about how they’ll look displayed in your home, over the couch perhaps. When everything feels good and looks connected, your photos feel natural, relaxed, elevated and the focus is on the connection, not the clothes.

Timeless color stories that are beautiful:

Cream, soft sage, soft blush pink and baby blue

All shades of blues + creams

Baby blue, soft coral, white, khaki

Yellow, medium pink, cream, rust

Blues (navy, teal, med blue), creams, sage green (you can tell I like blue…it goes great with the GREENERY)

Soft mint, light pink, khaki, grey, white

Here is the blue, cream, light green, pink again!

Obviously one of my favorite combos, again because it complements the GREEN in spring!

A few simple things to AVOID: skip bright overly bold colors with family portraits and save them for individual portraits if desired. Avoid logos, graphics, and stay away from everyone wearing the same colors. Only one or two people should wear a subtle pattern, everyone else go solid. Also avoid anything uncomfortable or that needs constant adjusting-it can hurt the mood/connection/pictures.

For moms, the most flattering styles are usually the ones that create shape while still feeling easy to move in. Dresses with a defined waist-like an empire waist or wrap styles-tend to photograph beautifully. Midi or maxi lengths on moms are safe and timeless because they look great when sitting, walking or holding the kids. And for sleeves, think coverage=more flattering, always.

As a full-serive photographer, I offer in home design consultations where I take the stress of choosing wardrobe off your plate by digging through your closet with you and sending links to purchase items you need to add.

Take advantage of the greenery, flowers and beautiful cooler weather, and choose a beautiful color scheme that is right for your family & couch and get the pictures. Time like this with them won’t last forever.
